Jenny van Dyk hopes for improved Spar Proteas against Australia

Spar Proteas head coach Jenny van Dyk is looking to see an improved performance when they face Australia in the second test match in Wollongong on Wednesday morning.

South Africa will be looking to level matters after losing 64-53 in the opening match at Red Energy Stadium on Saturday.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Van Dyk says there’s a relaxed mood in camp, but players are well aware of what is expected of them.

"The mood in the camp is relaxed but very focussed, I think everybody understands that we've got our work cut out for ourselves, and they have quite a lot of areas they can improve on going into this second test," said van Dyk.

"So we are looking forward to the opportunity to improve on a few of the key areas that we felt we let ourselves down in, and just to test ourselves to see what level of improvement we can bring forward in one match."

Van Dyk shared some of lessons taken from the first test, stating that they now understand what they need from the first quarter of the match.

"The lessons from the previous match is how clinical we need to be for the entire duration of the match against the world's best – one quarter that you lose your focus or that you're just to expensive can take you out of the running completely," she noted.

"So that's definitely the main focus for us going into this next match, and the second lesson is definitely that we can compete against the best – we gave three good quarters with a great scoreline.

"So we know that whatever the issues are that we felt on court, and the challenges we experienced, are fixable and it's within us to be able to execute a little bit better in the next match."
