Jenny van Dyk impressed with Spar Proteas performance despite defeat to New Zealand

Spar Proteas head coach Jenny van Dyk believes the team displayed a much-improved performance despite losing the Taini Jamison Trophy in the final day of their test series against New Zealand this morning.

The Silver Ferns came from behind to dismiss the Proteas by a tight 57-56 to claim three out of three wins to retain the trophy.

Speaking at a post match presser, van Dyk says she is proud of her team and says there are many lessons to learn ahead of their next test series against Australia.

"This has been such a valuable tour for us, and I think everyone can agree that the players have shown quite a lot of promise. The work that everyone has put in behind the scenes is really starting to show.

"Obviously, we wanted a better start to the series, but that is something we will dissect later on."

Van Dyk says this series has been a good buildup to next year’s Commonwealth games, stating that the team needs more experience against top teams in the world to help prepare for major championships.

Spar Proteas captain Khanyisa Chawane secured her 100th test match cap against the Silver Ferns this morning.

Van Dyk says she remains proud of the team’s latest centurion.

"I'm proud of all the players, but for Khanyisa to pick up her 100th cap is a massive milestone, and now everyone is extra motivated for the next series against Australia."

Silver Ferns interim coach Yvette McCauland-Durie also praised the Proteas for posing an early threat against them.
