Veteran Broadcaster honoured by GSport Award nomination

Veteran SABC Sport commentator Gloria Brown insists she was surprised by her gsport Women in Television nomination.

The 20th edition of the gsport Awards finalists were announced at the SABC Studios last week, and voting is open until 10 August.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Brown says she is honoured to have been nominated as her focus is always on working hard and not on the accolades.

"My feelings about the nomination are overwhelming right now. I was surprised, but I also realised that it is fitting.

"To be amplified by gsports is something that I will treasure for a long time," said the seasoned broadcaster.

Brown started TV as a touchline reporter; she then moved on to football analysis as well as commentary, and has worked in five FIFA World Cups and a lot of other continental tournaments.

She says even though commentary was not part of her career plans, her bosses at the public broadcaster pushed her to explore it.

As someone who has extensive experience in the sports media industry, Brown says the support from her family and the hard work behind the scenes have contributed to her consistency in the industry.

"My background, but more specifically, my supportive family, has played a major role in my career.

"I have remained true to myself over the years, and I have always performed my duties with honesty."

Known as ‘Mam Glo’ to the young women in sport that she mentors, she says she believes it has always been her duty to mentor young women, as there were not a lot of women who mentored her when she started in the industry.

"I have been able to lend a hand to fellow broadcasters, but when I first came on board, there was no one to guide me.

"I know what it is like to be alone in this industry; that's why when a young broadcaster comes to me and asks for help, I will gladly steer them in the right direction."
