Kass Naidoo unpacks two decades of gsport excellence

Gsport Trust founder Kass Naidoo is excited to embark on another historic moment after launching the 20th edition of the gsport Awards - a platform dedicated to empowering African women in the sports sector.

The 2025 edition of the gsport Awards marks a significant chapter in the initiative's journey - with this year's campaign set to honour legacy builders, celebrate new trailblazers and reflect on the growing visibility of women's sport over the past two decades.

In an exclusive interview with SABC Sport, Naidoo adds that she never imagined this kind of growth and continental impact for women in sport since their first season 2006.

“The 20th awards season for gsport, I don’t think we imagined this kind of success since launching in 2006. For us to be sitting in 2025, having also impacted the continent at large and not just women in South Africa means a great deal. Women from Ghana, Kenya, Uganda and Zambia have all won on the gsport stage, and are hoping to continue that trend,’’ said Naidoo.

Over the weekend the organisation hosted a private #gsport20 Gratitude Lunch in Johannesburg.

Naidoo says the gathering was mainly to pay homage to all women whose contributions helped to build gsport since 2006.

“We launched with a very small investment in 2006, and over the years through community support the initiative has been able to grow, with partners starting the value in gsport. So the gratitude lunch was us saying thank you to all our supporters and partners,’’ added Naidoo.

The 20th Annual gsport Awards nominations officially opened on 1 June.

Naidoo unpacks the nomination process.

“Nominations have been streaming in since we opened the process. It is an exciting month to inspire the youth as we uncover new icons and role models in women’s sport. The process is simple, get onto the gsport website, gsport.co.za clink on the awards link and follow a very simple process - the aim is to give as much information about the nominee so she can have the best chance to shine on the gsport awards stage this year,’’ she expressed.
