Mamelodi Sundowns hold on to another key player

SABC Sport can confirm that Mamelodi Sundowns have triggered the option on one of their long-serving players in Thapelo Morena.

The former Bloemfontein Celtic utility star joined the Tshwane giants from the now defunct Free State Stars outfit nearly a decade ago while Pitso Mosimane was still coaching the club.

Morena signed a new deal in 2020 around the time football was halted by the Covid pandemic and this is the agreement that was due to expire, albeit with Sundowns having choice to retain his services.

The player is considered one of the most consistent and now senior at Chloorkop given his experience and ability to be deployed in different positions at any time by all the coaches he has previously worked with.

Sundowns were busy once again during the 2024/25 season with the Betway Premiership, the three domestic cup competitions as well as the CAF Champions League in which they lost in the final to Pyramids.

Morena played in 39 matches as proof once again of his value to the club and will now be part of the FIFA World Cup squad.

The option means Sundowns have the defender on their books at least until the end of June 2026, but it is not yet clear at this stage whether there are imminent talks on a new contract altogether.

Morena joins a list of several other players who had the option clause triggered – among them Terrence Mashego, Khuliso Mudau and Aubrey Modiba.

But the club has recently released midfielders Rivaldo Coetzee and Sipho Mbule.
