Thabang Mosiako is the favourite to win the Gqeberha 10km race on Sunday

South African half-marathon champion Thabang Mosiako emerges as the top contender for victory in the upcoming Absa Run Your City Gqeberha 10km race this Sunday.

Hailing from the Eastern Cape’s Friendly City, Mosiako is intimately familiar with the race route like the back of his hand. His Personal best in the 10km was 27:44 achieved in France last year.

He lives and trains in the area further fortifying his advantage as he gears up for the event.

This edition of the race presents a showdown among local talents, notably absent of the Kenya and Ethiopian runners who have historically dominated.

Yet, Mosiako faces formidable opposition from Elroy Gelant and the South Africa national 10km record holder, Precious Mashele, whose remarkable time of 27 minutes and 35 seconds was set in Gqeberha last year.

''I am the favourite. I want to be like a soldier in a war fighting for his country to get freedom. Preparations are going well, I am healthy and injury free,'' said Mosiako.

The favorite tag carries its weight, and Mosiako is aware that all eyes will be on him.

The locals anticipate him crossing the finish line first, and he’s ready to give it his all.

''It is a bit of pressure, I just need to race according to my preparations and not find myself struggling in the last two 2 km,'' added Mosiako.

Under the guidance of Michael Mbambani, named Coach of the Year by Athletics South Africa (ASA), Mosiako thrives as a member of the Inkhamva Athletics Club. He finds a sense of belonging in Gqeberha.
