Proteas Women coach happy with boxes ticked on Zimbabwe tour

South Africa wrapped up their historic first ever T20 International series with the neighbours with a 5-0 whitewash yesterday, winning the final match in Bulawayo by 13 runs.

Mashimbyi says they wanted to stamp their authority on the Women Chevrons, and also see how some of the young players respond to the pressures of international cricket. 

He believes they passed the test with flying colours.

"I think the first box to tick was to make sure that we come here and give our authority and play with that intent throughout. Obviously, winning the series 5-0 was the first big box we wanted to tick," said Mashimbyi .

"The rest was just on individuals and the opportunities given and how they respond to different pressures during games. I thought that went well because we had different players with the ball putting their hands up, and I thought we were quite steady in the field as well. Overall, I am happy with what I have seen throughout."

The coach reiterated that all players selected now are on audition for the 2029 ICC Women’s World Cup, and have an equal opportunity to make sure they are part of the squad in three years’ time.

He says it’s up to those who are hungry enough to raise their hands every time they get an opportunity to play.

While there was a clear gap in quality between the two sides throughout the five matches, Mashimbyi gave credit to their hosts for providing a proper test for his players.

He believes that Zimbabwean women’s cricket is not too far off from becoming one of the top teams in the world.
