South Africa to welcome Netball World Cup trophy in Africa Month

World Cup Local Organising Committee (LOC), Patience Shikwambana has confirmed the trophy will land on South African shores this month.

The World Cup is fast approaching, with the tournament in Cape Town set to run from 28 July to 6 August, and word is that fans in Durban will get to interact with the trophy from Thursday, 25 May.

The trophy tour will then proceed to the other provinces around the country before finally touching down in the Mother City prior to the opening match.

"Africa month, the trophy is coming. I think it's arriving on the 25th, it's landing in KwaZulu Natal and it will be going to all the nine provinces. That will be part of the activations of saying 'Once you've seen the trophy, the Netball World Cup is not going anywhere, it's to coming to South Africa'", she said.

The most coveted Netball trophy in the world will be heavily guarded throughout its tour, with security detail never too far away.

"There's no way that we can compromise. I think you'll remember when we had the Queen's baton, sometime last year, in terms of the Commonwealth, you have to have security protecting some of these things. Which will be the same thing.”

Meetings are being held every two weeks by the LOC to keep tabs on the progress of preparations for the World Cup.

"We even have our Deputy Minister [Nocawe Mafu] sometimes joining our meetings, just to check how we are progressing. I've been saving even in the board meetings that we need a high-performing team. But you can't say we need a high-performing team that you do not support, that you do not enable to do its work. So whenever there are things they need we must intervene in a manner that makes it easier.”
