Shiko Mokaila looks ahead to first international series as head coach

Newly appointed South Africa Men’s Netball team head coach Shiko Mokaila says the upcoming Spar Challenge against Australia is an opportunity to test the team against a strong opponent.

Mokaila will lead the national team for the first time at the helm in a three match series resuming on 29 January at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mokaila says that this competition will help fine-tune some strategies for 2026 and also solidify team dynamics.

“Our first key competition is the Spar Challenge against Australia in April. It's a great opportunity to test our skills against a strong opponent and build momentum for the rest of the year.

We are focused on using this competition to fine-tune our strategies and solidify our team dynamics,” said Mokaila.

The SA men’s team is fresh from winning the Africa Cup in Lilongwe last month, and Mokaila says it will be key to build on that momentum as he takes over the team for the next four years.

“I'm truly humbled and excited to lead the team for the next four years. Our mandate is clear; build on the momentum of our Africa Cup win and position ourselves as a top contender on the international stage.

"We aim to develop a strong, competitive team that showcases the best of South African men's netball,” added Mokaila.

Mokaila further shared the team’s strategic plan when it comes to talent identification for the 2026 season.

“Talent identification is crucial, and we are committed to scouting talent from grassroots level, schools, and clubs. We'll be engaging with district teams, coaches, and selectors to identify emerging players who can contribute to our squad. It's about finding the right fit and nurturing talent to become world-class players,” he concluded.
