Run Your City 10km series provides local runners with the chance to earn monetary rewards

The highly anticipated Absa Run Your City 10km series returns, boasting an increased prize pool to empower South African athletes across five cities; Gqeberha, Cape Town, Durban, Tshwane, and Johannesburg.

With a combined purse exceeding R1.5 million, each event will offer R312 000 in prize money. The top male and female participants in every city stand to claim R30 000 each, while second-place finishers will secure R25 000, and third-place finishers will pocket R20 000.

Sue Forge, the race director, highlighted the event’s appeal to elite competitors and social runners, emphasizing the inclusive spirit of the running community.

"As the organisers of the ABSA Run Your City series, we are excited to announce an impressive combined prize purse of R1 560 000.00 in 2024. Consisting of five events, the series will start with the ABSA Run Your City Gqeberha 10k in April. Followed by the ABSA Run Your City Cape Town 10k in May. The ABSA Run Your City Durban 10km in July and the ABSA Run Your City 10km in August and concluding with the Joburg 10km in September,” said Forge.

Top-tier athletes like Glenrose Xaba, the Phalula sisters, Lebo and Lebogang, Irvette Van Zyl, Precious Mashele, Kabelo Mulaudzi, Namakoe Nkhasi, and numerous others, both male and female, will vie for the prize money.

This inclusive event welcomes seasoned veteran runners such as Charne Bosman, who is over 40 years, and social runners alike, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to participate and reap the rewards.  

"Each of the five events will feature a total prize purse of R312 000 within the allocation R252 000 will be earmarked for the open category with the R126 000 dedicated to the top 10 open men and a R126 000 to the top ten open women. Additionally, R60 000 will be designated for age category prize money.

“The top male and top female finishers in each city will be awarded R30 000 each, with R25 000 going to second place finishes and R20 000 to third place finishes. The age category prize purse will be distributed among the top three finishes. In each of the juniour, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 plus categories."
