Olian Thobejane leads Ekurhuleni A to Men’s National Championships final

Ekurhuleni A coach Olian Thobejane says he is proud to lead his side to their fourth consecutive final of the Men’s Netball National Championships.

The defending champions secured a hard-fought 39-38 win over eThekwini at Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha to book their place in the final.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Thobejane says team unity and a willingness to play for one another has been key to their continued success.

“I’m very proud of the team. Reaching another final, especially after winning the championship three times, shows the consistency and hard work that these boys have put in. It’s not something that happens by chance.

“What has made this team outstanding is the belief they have in each other. We have a group of players who are willing to work for one another, listen, learn and take responsibility. We’ve also been through difficult moments during the tournament, but the boys have remained together and continued to push.

“As coaches, our job is to prepare them, but once they step on court, they have to trust themselves and trust the person next to them. I think that unity has been one of our biggest strengths,” said Thobejane.

The Gauteng side has enjoyed an unbeaten run in this year’s competition, winning all five of their matches.

The 39-year-old coach says their semi-final against eThekwini provided a stern test ahead of their title defence.

“For me, that is what a team is about. You’re not always going to have a perfect game, but you have to find a way to stay composed and get the job done. The semi-final showed a lot of character from the boys,” added Thobejane.

The three-time champions have now shifted their focus to Friday’s final against West Rand, with Thobejane calling for discipline and composure.
