Australian Open: Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner to return for '1 Point Slam' in 2027

The Australian Open will bring back its innovative "1 Point Slam" in 2027, with Carlos Alcaraz, Coco Gauff, Naomi Osaka and Jannik Sinner among the leading players confirmed to take part.

The sudden-death competition made its debut at Melbourne Park ahead of this year's Australian Open in January. It featured 24 professional players alongside 24 amateurs and celebrity wildcards.

Each match was decided by a single point, with the winner progressing and the loser eliminated.

Amateur Jordan Smith stunned the star-studded field at a packed Rod Laver Arena to win the competition and claim the Aus$1 million (US$670,000) prize.

Tennis Australia's Tom Larner said the event provided a unique opportunity for amateur players to share the stage with some of the sport's biggest stars.

"It creates an opportunity for grassroots tennis players to share the spotlight with some of the biggest names in the game," said Tennis Australia's Tom Larner.

"Having stars like Carlos Alcaraz, Coco Gauff, Naomi Osaka and Jannik Sinner locked in to play, alongside everyday Australians... captures exactly what this event is about, bringing people together through tennis."

The amateur field will once again feature winners from eight state championship events held across Australia, with a further eight players earning their places through qualifying.

More than 1.3 million spectators attended the 2026 Australian Open, with organisers planning to increase viewing capacity and seating for next year's tournament.

The 2027 Australian Open will be held from January 17-31.
