Joseph Seutloali welcomes Two Oceans Marathon prize money increase

Lesotho road-running star Joseph Seutloali has welcomed the increased prize money announced for this year’s Two Oceans Marathon.

Seutloali, who competes in the colours of Hollywood Athletics Club, enjoyed a memorable 2025 season after pocketing R250 000 for victories at both the Two Oceans and Soweto marathons, capping off a historic year on the road.

The double champion went on to celebrate further milestones off the road, tying the knot with his long-time partner back home in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.

Popularly known as the world’s most beautiful marathon, the Two Oceans Marathon has raised its total prize purse across all distances to R2.6 million.

Athletes competing in the flagship 56km ultra-marathon, the 21.1km half-marathon and various age categories will all benefit from the enhanced rewards.

The first male and female finishers in the ultra-marathon will each receive R380 000, with second place earning R220 000 and third place taking home R100 000.

The ultra-marathon is scheduled for Friday, 11 April, followed by the half-marathon on Sunday, 12 April.

Winners of the 21.1km race will each earn R50 000, underlining the competitiveness of the event.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Seutloali confirmed that he will return to defend his title and is motivated by the improved prize structure.

“I love running the Two Oceans Marathon, and seeing the prize money increase like this really motivates me,” said Seutloali. “I am over the moon and excited to come back to South Africa. This race is very close to my heart, and my coach and I have already started preparing for April.”

The runner, who has since ventured into business back home, said he has invested his previous winnings wisely, knowing that an athletics career can be short-lived.

“I have started a family and a business, and I am focused on making it grow,” he added. “We are coming to do our best and represent both my club and my country with pride.”
