Akani Simbine happy with his first 200m race in a few years despite defeat

Despite being defeated by Tebogo Letsile of Botswana, South Africa’s 100m record holder Akani Simbine was satisfied with his performance in his first 200m race in several years at the Athletics South Africa (ASA) Continental Tour, Challenger Grand Prix Series third leg held at the University of Johannesburg.

Letsile claimed victory with a time of 19.94 seconds, while Simbine crossed the Finish Line with a time of 20.32 in front of a packed crowd.

Simbine deliberately challenged himself against Letsile, the world championships 100m silver medallist, in his first official race of the season.

''This wasn't part of the plan but it turned out to our benefit, we got to see where I am at training. But I'm happy with this one,'' said Simbine.

As the Grand Prix entered its final stretch, Simbine directed his attention towards defending his 100m title at the forthcoming ASA Senior Track and Field Championships in Pietermaritzburg next month, as well as the world relay championships in the Bahama in Many and the Diamond League in China in April.

''Next one is the nationals, I will make sure that I get the job done at nationals. Then the Diamond League in China,'' added Simbine.

Simbine is among the athletes who have openly voiced concerns regarding the inadequate preparations for the 4x100m relay ahead of the Olympic Games.

Nonetheless, he finds encouragement in the recent progress made through staging camps and events during the Grand races.
