It’s back to the drawing board for SA’s 4x100m team after Commonwealth heartbreak

The quartet of Akani Simbine, Bradley Nkoana, Mvuyo Moss, and Cheswell Johnson crossed the finish line in fifth place, while Australia won the title in 38.07 seconds. 

However, South Africa’s race ended in disappointment after the team was disqualified for a lane infringement.

Simbine admitted that things did not go according to plan and that the team never found the smooth rhythm they were hoping for. 

The disqualification also completed a difficult Games for Nkoana, who had earlier been disqualified for a false start in the men’s 100m semi-finals.

"It wasn't as smooth as we wanted it to be because from the start we just couldn't get going. We came into this race with the fastest time but I guess it's just part of the game."

Despite the setback, Simbine believes the team still has a bright future. 

The sprint star, who helped South Africa win a historic Olympic silver medal in the 4x100m relay at Paris 2024, says the squad has the talent to challenge for medals at the World Championships in China next year and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

"We have so much potential, we have shown that over the years and that we are one of the best relay teams in the world. Now we just need to keep our heads down and keep moving forward and I'm sure next time we'll get it done right."

Nkoana says the team must now return to the drawing board, work closely with the coaches, and fix the mistakes that cost them dearly in Glasgow. 

He admits that the performance was far below the standards they have set for themselves.
