Kaizer Chiefs continue good form with hard-fought win over 10-man Stellenbosch

Kaizer Chiefs made it four consecutive victories in the league when they beat 10-man Stellenbosch 2-1 at the FNB stadium on Saturday.

The visitors played most of the game a man down after goalkeeper Sage Stephens was shown a straight red card in the 16th minute.

Ashley Du Preez converted a penalty in the 11th minute before Keagan Dolly doubled the lead after 25 minutes but Ibraheem Jabaar pulled a goal back for the visitors to ensure a nervy finish.

Amakhosi made a good start to the contest and were rewarded when Stellies defender Olwethu Makhanya brought down Du Preez in the box.

The forward dusted himself off and scored the spot-kick against his former club and the home team seemed to gain confidence.

The visitors were then reduced to 10 men when Stephens was given his marching orders for handling the ball outside of his penalty area while denying Dolly a goal-scoring opportunity.

The Soweto giants then doubled their lead midway through the first half when Dolly struck a shot from outside the box that took a slight deflection to beat goalkeeper Lee Langeveldt.

Stellies, to their credit, held out until halftime and came out a different outfit after the interval as coach Steve Barker made a few tactical adjustments.

They were rewarded when Jabaar collected a through ball that beat the Chiefs defence and calmly slotted past Brandon Peterson.

The visitors now had their tails up and looked dangerous with every attacking foray while Amakhosi seemed to be retreating.

While the game was open, Stellies failed to give the killer final pass when they opened up the Chiefs defence.

The visitors then had a glorious opportunity to steal a point in injury time but Peterson pulled off a point-blank save from Juan Carlos Ortiz.
