Cassius Mailula not ready for Europe - Hugo Broos

Despite previously advocating for South African players to take up opportunities in Europe, coach Hugo Broos believes striker Cassius Mailula isn’t ready yet.

The Bafana Bafana mentor has handed the Mamelodi Sundowns forward his first national team call-up ahead of the two crucial back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Liberia this month.

But when asked if Mailula, who has scored nine goals in 13 games for Downs this season, should move overseas Broos explains why it’s too early.

"You have to be careful with sending such a player too soon to Europe. Honestly, I don't think he's ready for Europe now. Mailula is doing very well but it's his first season. Last year we saw him in one or two games that he finished but now it's his breakthrough," he said.

Broos insists that one more year at Downs, gaining experience in the CAF Champions League, is in Mailula’s best interest.

"I should advise him to stay another year at Sundowns, playing Champions League again. It will be good for his development. Don't underestimate going to Europe, especially for a striker," he added.

The coach adds that it should be taken into account that this is the 21-year-old’s breakthrough season in the Premier Soccer League topflight.

"It's very difficult, so again he has the potential but don't take that decision too soon. I know everyone is chanting Mailula, Mailula but be careful with that. It's his first season," he concluded.
