Tony de Zorzi trusting the process in competitive Proteas set-up

Proteas batter Tony de Zorzi has explained that he just had to trust the process when things were not going well for him within the national team and kept working hard away from the spotlight.

De Zorzi played a massive role in South Africa’s win over Pakistan in the second ODI last night, posting a solid 76 in their 270-run chase for the victory.

He says he had to bide his time and understand that a few bad results do not make you a less talented player.

"When runs are hard to come by, you just have to try and detach yourself from that as a person, and rediscover your routines that have worked for you on and off the field."

He says there was no specific conversation with Shukri Conrad around his dwindling form, but he was given a confidence boost by getting picked to play, which was enough for him to know what the coach thinks of his abilities.

A lot of players have struggled with the heavily spin-friendly conditions of the sub-continent, but de Zorzi has found it relatively easy to play there. He revealed that he actually does prefer facing spin and is technically more equipped for it.

"The conditions suit my style of play, in terms of the pace and bounce of the wicket. There is a lot more spin involved as well, which I prefer from a technical aspect.

"When you're playing in the subcontinent, you're basically only moving from the hotel to the field, so you get to remain in that work-focused mindset."

Conrad has often used the phrase “horses for courses” to describe his approach to the game, and has used players in different positions than those they’ve played in before.

De Zorzi says this has helped promote competition for places in the team and provides different sets of skills for the players.
