Shukri Conrad impressed with Duan Jansen as he hands him maiden call-up

Jansen – the twin brother of another Protea, Marco – was included in the squad to tour Namibia later this month for the T20 tri-series including Zimbabwe, as well as the subsequent ODI series against the hosts in Windhoek. 

Conrad says Jansen can add to their pool of all-rounders, and hopes he can finally get out of his brother’s shadow and make a name for himself at international level.

"We are constantly looking at the guys who are doing well at the domestic level, especially when it comes to building a strong base of all-rounders and the more quality all-rounders we have at our disposal the better. Duan did particularly well across all formats."

Conrad picked out Jansen’s performance for the Titans in the CSA One-Day Cup final against the Lions, where his unbeaten 61 helped his side win by three wickets.

"What impressed me the most about that final against the Lions was how he managed quite a tricky period with the bat. We know that he often operates in the shadow of his twin brother, but he has all the ingredients to become a quality all-rounder and a wonderful addition."

The coach also spoke about 25-year-old Tiaan van Vuuren, whom he says was earmarked to be part of the SA-A side to host Bangladesh-A also later this month. van Vuuren sustained a hamstring injury while playing for Surrey in the UK.

"Tiaan is one we've always had our eye on. He performed wonderfully well in the UK so much so that Surrey snapped him up for the one day cup, but we are just waiting for a report on his injury because he was earmarked to play that A-series."

Jordan Hermann, whose older brother Rubin is also part of the squad, also gets another chance after getting injured on the tour of New Zealand earlier this year. Conrad says the aim is to get fringe players internationally active for when their chance comes in the bigger tours.
