Bavuma says he hopes the recent success they’ve achieved will be a springboard for more, having broken a 27-year ICC trophy hoodoo.
He implored the current generation of players not to rest on their laurels and continue where they left off for the next few years.
"From a team perspective, we'd like to leave a winning legacy behind, and we want to mark the beginning of South Africa winning more ICC events.
"This team doesn't have a major legacy just yet, but we'll speak again in 2-3 years' time," said the South African skipper.
For the immediate future, the Proteas will have to continue that winning form without their captain, who has been ruled out of their two-match series against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo from next week with a hamstring strain. Bavuma trusts that the team will be able to get back down to earth from last week’s high and do the job there.
"The beauty of international cricket is that there is always another exciting challenge waiting for you.
The Proteas’ victory in the World Test Championship was celebrated by all here at home, and the team felt it. He says they are proud of their achievement for what it did for the country. Once celebrations die down, the guys will shift their focus to the Zimbabwe tour," explained Bavuma.
He also acknowledged the support he’s been afforded by his family, saying that he would not be where he is were it not for them.
The first test against Zimbabwe starts exactly a week from today, with the second beginning on July 6.
