Temba Bavuma basking in India series glory after comprehensive victory

Proteas captain Temba Bavuma admitted that a 2-0 series victory was the furthest thing from his mind when they arrived in India, with history heavily stacked against his team.

South Africa delivered a performance for the ages when they defeated the hosts by a mammoth 408 runs in the second and final Test match in Guawahati to secure their first series win in India since the year 2000, and the heaviest defeat in Test history for India.

Before the first match in Kolkata last week, they had never even won a match on Indian soil in 15 years and were whitewashed 3-0 in both 2015 and 2019.

"Coming to India is always a tough prospect. I think what makes this victory sweeter is that we have experienced the other side of this result many times before on past tours and we know how dark it can be.

"Coming here, I never thought we would win the series 2-0, but it's once again another memorable moment for this team."

Bavuma says the team is in a good space at the moment, with everyone chipping in, in both the batting order and bowling unit.

The victory in India will also go a long way in silencing the critics who had a lot to say about their path to the World Test Championship victory earlier this year.

"The team is in a really good space, but I guess that is what winning creates. From a batting point of view, we don't have guys who are scoring big hundreds, but we have 5 or 6 guys who are willing to contribute as a collective to ensure a formidable score.

"From a bowling point of view, we know that we have enough to ensure that the result is on our side."

He also lauded the leadership within the team with several senior players within the set-up to consult with from a tactical perspective.

Marco Jansen was named Player of the Match after his explosive 93 with the bat in the first innings, while he also returned overall bowling figures of 7/71. Bavuma says they did expect seam bowling to play a big part despite the focus being on spin in the sub-continent.
