Shukri Conrad reflects on Proteas unbeaten run at T20 World Cup

Proteas coach Shukri Conrad has pointed to the Afghanistan match as their most difficult of the ICC T20 World Cup so far, admitting things could have gone very differently had that result not gone their way.

South Africa remain the only unbeaten team at the tournament heading into the semifinals following their five-wicket victory over neighbours Zimbabwe to round out the Super 8 stage on Sunday.

Reflecting on their journey so far, the historic tie against the Afghans that saw two Super Overs needed to decide that Group D match is one the coach believes could have potentially altered their entire trajectory.

"Ja, I thought that Afghanistan game was massive in many respects because it could so easily have not gone our way, and then the pressure was really up on us against New Zealand," reflected Conrad.

"And in some sort of way, [that victory] really pulled the group together and, with regards to the question, I don't know – we just go about our business normally and we've played some really good cricket.

"So you can't go looking for things that aren't there, I still feel that in the field, maybe, we can create a bit more opportunities, our catching has let us down a little bit, but I don't want to be ultra critical now, we are playing some really good cricket."

The Proteas came close to winning the T20 World Cup the last time out but fell short to India in the final in Barbados, and Conrad believes his players are better for that experience and believes their day on the podium is not too far now.

"Obviously the guys are richer for that experience, they would have learnt so much about themselves and Aiden has been fantastic – both with bat in hand and as a leader," he added.

"But you're only as good as your troops, and he would be the first one to admit that, so it's easy to captain a bowling unit that's on top of their game and batters that are firing.

"But Aiden has been at the forefront of everything that we do, and I think our experience in the last T20 World Cup will stand us in good stead, and when you keep making semifinals and finals, eventually you're going to win one."
