SA20 2024 format, fixtures and teams explained

Last year saw the Eastern Cape Sunrisers win a thrilling final to be crowned inaugural champions of an incredibly successful event.

This time around, the six superstar-studded teams are back in action to thrill Mzansi, albeit with a twist.

SA20 TEAMS

Sunrisers Eastern Cape

The defending champions are led by Proteas star Aiden Markram and play out of St. Georges Park in Gqeberha. 

Rising stars Tristan Stubbs and Marco Jansen will also feature prominently for the Sunrisers. 

Durban Super Giants

Proteas spinner and local Keshav Maharaj captains the Super Giants, who play out of Kingsmead in Durban. 

Other stars include big hitters Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen, while West Indies all-rounder Kyle Meyers will be useful.

Pretoria Capitals

Last year's losing finalists will hope to go one better in 2024. Captained by veteran Wayne Parnell, the Capitals also have journeyman New Zealander Jimmy Neesham and rising star Eathan Bosch for guidance. 

Speedster Anrich Nortje will look to bowl the speed of light at their home in Centurion.

Joburg Super Kings

Led by the effervescent Faf du Plessis, the Super Kings have a dynamic bowling attack with tweakers Imran Tahir and Aaron Phangiso as well as young quicks Gerald Coetzee and Nandre Burger. 

Undoubtedly, the Wanderers will be heaving on game days.

MI Cape Town

West Indies heavyweight Keron Pollard leads a Cape Town franchise littered with superstars. 

Kagiso Rabada, Dewald Brevis and England’s Liam Livingstone will look to make amends for what has to be said was a disappointing 2023 campaign.   

Paarl Royals

Playing out of the steamy but picturesque Boland Park, captain David Miller will be eager to team up with power hitters Jos Buttler and Jason Roy to put bowling attacks to the sword. 

SA20 FORMAT 

Each team will play each other in "home" and "away" fixtures. Four points are allocated for a win, two for a No Result and zero for a loss. There is also a bonus point system in place if a team wins with a run rate difference of 1.25 times.

The top four teams on the points after the League Stage will advance to the Playoffs. And this is where there’s a twist, as the second SA20 edition has adopted the IPL-style Eliminator. 

The top team plays the second-ranked team with the winner going straight to the final. However, the loser is still in the competition. 

The third-ranked team plays the fourth-ranked team and the loser is knocked out altogether. The winner then plays the team that lost the first game for a place in the final.
