New Zealand defeat run-shy England to seal ODI series victory

New Zealand defeated England by five wickets at Seddon Park to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three match One Day International series.

The New Zealanders won the toss and sent England in to bat and were rewarded for their decision in the third over when Jacob Duffy dismissed opener Ben Ducket to leave the visitors at 3/1.

Jamie Smith was the next to fall in the sixth over, caught by Kane Williamson off the bowling of Zakary Foulkes after making only 13 runs.

Jacob Bethell and Joe Root managed to steer the ship for a few overs of the powerplay before Root fell to Blair Tickner in the 12th over as the home side tightened the screws with the ball.

Bethell and Jos Buttler then fell in quick succession despite having had a promising start to their innings, leaving England reeling at 81/5

None of the English partnerships lasted long with Harry Brook and Sam Curran's sixth wicket partnership top scoring with only 24 runs before it was broken by Mitchell Santner.

Jamie Overton provided the only resistance from the lower order, scoring an impressive 42 runs off 28 balls before being dismissed by Player of the Match Blair Tickner as the visitors totalled 175 runs all out in 36 overs.

England started the second innings with a bang when Jofra Archer dismissed dangerous opener Will Young LBW in the fourth ball of the first over.

Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson negated the powerplay before Jamie Overton bowled out Kane Williamson in the 11th over to leave New Zealand on 42/2.

Ravindra continued to dominate the English bowlers, reaching another half century before being caught by Adil Rashid to give Archer his second wicket of the match.

England gave themselves a glimmer of hope when Adil Rashid dismissed Tom Latham for two runs and Michael Bracewell became Archer's third scalp with the score at 118/5.

However, a confident Darryl Mitchell (56 not out) soaked in a bit of pressure before steering the team to victory alongside Mitchell Santner (34 not out), powering home with some big hitting after the drinks break.

New Zealand takes a 2-0 lead in the series with the final ODI to be played on Saturday at the Wellington Regional Stadium.
