MS Dhoni returns to nets as CSK look to bounce back from opening loss

MS Dhoni returns to nets as CSK look to bounce back from opening loss

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) received a morale boost as MS Dhoni was seen back in the training nets, signalling progress in his recovery from a calf strain.

Dhoni, who was ruled out for the first two weeks of the Indian Premier League 2026 season, has yet to receive official clearance for a return to match action.

Reports from Sportstar noted him batting during a recent practice session, a development team management described as a positive sign. CSK are expected to take a cautious approach, prioritising his long-term fitness over a rushed comeback. No timeline for his return has been provided.

Dhoni's absence has been acutely felt. Beyond his batting and wicketkeeping, the former captain's calm decision-making, guidance for bowlers in pressure situations, and tactical input on field placements have left a noticeable gap.

CSK struggled particularly in their opening match against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati, where they were bowled out for just 127 in 19.4 overs.

Their batting lacked partnerships and momentum, failing to accelerate in the death overs. Rajasthan Royals comfortably chased the target, reaching 128/2 in 12.1 overs, highlighting CSK's shortcomings in execution.

Looking ahead, CSK's next fixture sees them host Punjab Kings at Chepauk. Playing at home could offer an advantage, with conditions favouring their bowling attack.

As five-time IPL champions, the team is focused on regrouping, addressing batting issues, and finding consistency.
