Mandla Mashimbyi expects champions mindset ahead of Proteas Women’s ICC World Cup opener

Proteas Women coach Mandla Mashimbyi expects his players to have a champions mindset as they take on England in their 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup opener in Guwahati.

The Proteas resume their 50 overs World Cup campaign after winning their last warm match against Pakistan Women by four wickets on Sunday, also following their  successful tour to Pakistan as part of the team’s World Cup preparation.

Mashimbyi says the players should trust in their capacity to win games if they want to return home with the coveted trophy.

"I think the big word here is trust, it's for them to trust their abilities, trust their teammates and just have some belief that they're good enough and sometimes to be a champion you gotta think like one,” Mashimbyi said.

“I think once you start trusting your ability and trusting the work that you've put in, you're halfway there as an individual and then obviously just to relay that to the whole team and make sure that when we actually take the field everybody is on the same page."

Mashimbyi says the team has prepared well for their first match and have acclimatised and hoping to cope in the Guwahati weather.

"I think, it's been really good, I think the girls have really given it their all in terms of making sure that they're ready for the first game, obviously we still have a day to go and there's weather around but I'm sure we'll cope,” the coach added.

“i think the work that we've put in before this week will be sufficient and I think going to the first game, I think the players just have to be positive and fresh from a mindset point of view and fresh from a physical point of view as well. I'm actually really excited to see them take the field and really bowl that first ball or hit that first ball."
