Laura Wolvaardt confident of better ODI series in New Zealand

Proteas Women captain Laura Wolvaardt believes they’re capable of a much better ODI series against New Zealand than they had in the T20Is, where they were thumped 4-1 just a few days ago.

Wolvaardt was speaking ahead of the first of three matches in Christchurch tomorrow, the same venue they played the final T20 game.

The captain pointed to last year’s World Cup final run and their two series wins over Ireland and Pakistan in the summer as evidence that they are a lot more comfortable in the 50-over format, and expects that to continue.

"Yeah, I had some good reflections and a couple of good meetings, and I think there's a lot we obviously want to be a lot better at in this ODI series," said Wolvaardt.

"It's a format we've been pretty good in, or pretty consistent in the last couple of months, so we're sort of just thinking back to what worked for us, especially in the World Cup, and what we did well.

"We probably just didn't execute as well as we would have liked in the T20s, just missed a bit, but I think the plans we have in place for the ODIs just sound pretty solid, so hopefully we can put up some better performances."

While the series defeat looks bad on paper, Wolvaardt is convinced it was not all doom and gloom, insisting it was more of a mixed bag of performances and form with some players able to show more consistency than others.

"Yeah, a bit of a mixed bag. I think we have some people who perhaps aren't striking it as well as they would like, but at the same time we've had some people really putting up their hands," she added.

"I think Kayla [Reyneke] has been excellent with the bat, she's really had an amazing breakout series, so it's nice to know we have that power at the bank end of the order.

"I think we had glimpses of good performances as well, I think [Masabata] Klaas had an excellent game, Aya [Khakha] had an excellent game with the ball as well, so I think the ingredients that we had there, we just need it all to come together at the same time."
