Keshav Maharaj: Proteas not getting carried away after India win

Proteas spinner Keshav Maharaj has assured the team have quickly shifted focus to tomorrow’s crunch Super 8 fixture against West Indies in the ICC T20 World Cup in Ahmedabad.

South Africa are now just one win away from sealing their place in the semifinals after an emphatic 76-run victory over co-hosts and defending champions India on Monday.

However, Maharaj knows the importance of not getting carried away and says they will not take the Windies for granted.

"I think coming back after the win against India, there was a real energy and buzz in our camp. We are not getting carried away with that because we know there is still a lot of cricket to be played in this tournament.

"West Indies are a very strong side, a very dangerous side, and are not to be taken for granted at any stage, but we will just focus on what we do really well."

Having beaten the West Indies 2-1 in a three-match T20 series on home soil last month, 'Keshie' knows all too well the dangers of facing the fifth-ranked side in the world.

"At this stage in the tournament it's a huge game for us, because we know if we get over the line it gives us that qualification for the semi-finals. The West Indies do have a way of turning up in these events and we know the danger they possess from an explosive point of view.

"They've got some batsmen in great form and some bowlers finding their rhythm."

The Proteas are looking to shrug off the 'chokers' tag for their knack of losing critical matches in major tournaments, but Maharaj admits beating Afghanistan in a tense double-Super Over and walloping India augurs well for their character.

"I think it speaks to the character within the lineup and within our squad. In previous world cups, we never crossed those moments, so we take the small victories and we keep building to propel ourselves to go further in this tournament."
