Petersen scored 90 runs as they successfully chased down their opponents’ 248 with one ball to spare, securing their first trophy in a rather difficult season for them. The Pretoria side didn’t have the best of campaigns in both the T20 Challenge earlier in the season and the Four Day Series, failing to make the play-offs in either, and Petersen believes this victory is proof-positive that they are good enough to compete with the best.
"As I woke up this morning, this is the picture I saw, and it worked out great for me and for the team. To get this result after the seesaw season we had is massive for this group. Hopefully, we take some momentum from this and know that we are good enough not just to compete, but to win. So, onto next season," said Petersen
Coming in number three Petersen had to do some rescue work with both openers Lesego Senokwane and Rivaldo Moonsamy already dismissed for respective ducks, and admitted that it was a tall order. He revealed that the plan was to just stay at the crease for as long as possible.
The Lions had earlier won the toss and elected to bat in their more familiar conditions, and Petersen lauded his bowlers for restricting them to a score he believes was below par.
"Nah, before the game, if they had told us take 248, we would have taken it. I thought it was just below par. We did bowl well, our bowlers have been bowling well of late, and to restrict them to that was a great achievement."
While the Bullring crowd was expected to be more tilted towards their opponents, Petersen says they actually were made to feel more at home. He says the fans played a big role in them being able to cross the line and become champions.
