Kapp fought off illness before match-winning performance against India

Proteas Women all-rounder Marizanne Kapp has revealed that she had to fight off some illness before her T20 World Cup match-winning performance against India yesterday, which the Proteas Women won by 6 wickets.

Kapp was named Player of the Match in that encounter at Old Trafford in Manchester, and the health scare in warm-up makes the performance even more remarkable as she returned bowling figures of 2/27 and top scored with 81 with the bat.

"I was actually a little bit ill during the warm-up, I didn't feel well at all so I went into the change room, cried a bit, and then our team doctor is obviously amazing.

"It was a wonderful game of cricket for us. People always say I'm so angry when I play cricket but show me a bowler who's going to smile at somebody who hits you for a six or a four. In general, I'm really happy with the win."

Kapp shared an important 97-run third wicket partnership with Tazmin Brits as they chased India's 158, with the latter ending on 40 in her first match of the competition. This was the first time South Africa successfully chased down over 150 in a Women’s T20 World Cup.

A veteran of 123 matches in the format which traces back all the way to 2009, Kapp says this was easily her best innings. Her previous highest score was 75 against Australia in Canberra over two years ago.

The Proteas Women had beaten India 4-1 in a recent series going into that game, but the 36-year-old says they were under no illusions that a game against that particular opponent was going to be easy.

"We had some success against India, but in saying that we knew at the World Cup, it only takes one player to perform on the day and you can take the game away from the opposition. It's always tough to play against a strong Indian team because the game could've gone any way."
