South Africa went down by four wickets at the Three Ws Oval on Duckworth-Lewis method, following some rain interruptions that forced the Windies’ target to be revised to 180 in just 34 overs.
This was after The Proteas batted first and posted a total of 232/9 in their 50 allotted overs with Brits scoring a half century in the match, but she was disappointed that they ultimately could not capitalise on that.
"I think we started quite well with the bat up front, Laura Wolvaardt and myself managed to get them team to 40-plus runs in the powerplay, we then lost it in the middle, and I don't believe that we hit our line and lengths like we should've.
"We're going to have to pull up our socks," demanded Brits.
Her 57 runs on the day took her past the 1000 run mark for South Africa in ODI cricket, having played 35 matches since 2021.
She says it means little having lost the match, and would have loved to contribute more towards a higher total for the team.
Brits actually suggested that they made a tactical error in their bowling, and should have persisted with spin even though the weather conditions had changed. She says they were seduced by the rain to bring back seam, which was their ultimate downfall.
"I definitely think the rain had a massive role to play, because we were forced to change our strategy. The spinners pulled the game back for us, but then we turned to seam, which let us down," explained Brits.
She also urged her teammates to not be too obsessed with hitting boundaries heading into the second match on Saturday, but to prioritise strike rotation a bit more.
