Dewald Brevis caught unaware as master class re-writes record books

Proteas batter Dewald Brevis admitted he was completely unaware that his unbeaten 125-run stand broke several long-standing South African records as they beat Australia by 53 runs in Darwin on Tuesday.

At 22 years and 105 days old, Brevis became the youngest South African to hit a T20I century – beating Richard Levi’s record (24 years old), while also eclipsing Faf du Plessis’ 10-year highest score of 119, and his 41-ball 100 was the second fastest in SA history behind only David Miller’s 35-ball ton in 2017.

Brevis says it’s a privilege to have entered the history books, but he's equally excited to kick on from here.

"If someone didn't tell me after the game then I wouldn't have known – but it's Jacques Kallis, if I'm correct? Someone said it's Jacques – but is it Faf? I got it wrong, I didn't know," said Brevis.

"But it's obviously a privilege and honour, and there aren't a lot of words, I'm just extremely grateful and excited for what is ahead."

It hasn’t always been smooth sailing for Brevis in the Proteas jersey, having found himself on cast out from the white-ball squad for some time and, though he admits frustration over that period, he firmly believes all that was part of a learning curve for his career.

"I think I would have loved to obviously be here [in the team], the Proteas is a very special place for me, so to be apart of it and go out of it, that wasn't easy, it was tough," he admitted.

"But I'm extremely grateful for [that experience], if it wasn't for that, that's all apart of your journey and that's what makes you stronger, and that's why I'm here now – and I think it's a big reason for how I'm playing now too.

"I've had to make all those mistakes that all the senior players actually warned me about – all the guys told me, 'Watch out for this; do this; do that,' and I basically did the exact opposite.

"So it's important to go through that and to be able to be here now, it's special, that's all I can say."
