Why CAF pulled the plug on CHAN

CAF president Patrice Motsepe has expanded on the decision to cancel the African Nations Championship (CHAN), the tournament reserved for locally based players.

Motsepe initially confirmed the decision during his opening press conference at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. This week, he offered further insight into the reasoning behind the move, citing financial concerns.

"The first thing I was asked to do as CAF President was to kill the CHAN, and I wasn't going to do that because some of the member associations who do not have the same resources and skills said please keep it in. I can tell you now, with this African Nations league, it will take the place of CHAN because there will be no more need for it."

CAF will introduce the African Nations League going forward, which Motsepe argues will feel like having an AFCON every single year.

Motsepe also added that, contrary to some opinions, there was a collaboration with the rest of the world to see African standards improve.

"Europe or North and South America are not our enemies. There are times when we disagree and times when we work together for their success and our success. It's clear in my mind, we are going to have the best mutually beneficial relationship with all the other continents."
