WAFCON Champions prize money doubles as Motsepe announces World Cup technical review

This marks a 100 percent increase from last year’s tournament and a huge improvement from the first prize of $200 000 for the winner of this competition, when Motsepe took over in 2021. 

With the 14th edition of the WAFCON taking place this coming weekend in Morocco, the total prize money has been increased by 67% from $ 3.5 million to $5.8million. 

"I will be leaving South Africa on Saturday to go to Morocco for the WAFCON and we have increased the prize money of the WAFCON. So, they gave me some high numbers, they said to me, since the new leadership since I became president and the people I've had the honour to work with, remember no leader succeeds on his own, in anything,” Motsepe said.

“The credit should not go to the leader, the credit should go to the people that she or he has the privilege to work with. People say all these wonderful things I've done in CAF, I think give credit to the presidents of the 54 African member associations. “Give credit to my vice presidents, give credit to the EXCO because we did it together."

Meanwhile, Motsepe has also revealed that they will be hosting a gathering of African footballing minds, including coaches and Technical Directors of the nations that represented the continent at the World Cup, to review the African team’s performance in that tournament.  

He says these experts will focus on the positive that Africa can focus on.

"We are gonna host a meeting, I'm told that Cabo Verde and some other countries want to host that meeting, where we are going to invite all of the coaches of the national teams that participated in the FIFA World Cup and others,” he added. 

“We are going to invite football experts, former legends on the continent, the smartest, the brightest who've played in the highest levels in the world and the purpose of that meeting is to talk about what we can do better. 

“What we learnt from our performances in America, in Canada and in Mexico. Where is the room for improvement because we are very clear and this is a different clarity in our mind because this is a clarity that's backed up by results. Ghana played well, Côte d'Ivoire played well, Algeria, as I said, every single one of them."
