Tottenham manager Roberto de Zerbi gives James Maddison fitness update

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has provided a key update on the fitness of James Maddison as Spurs prepare for the final stretch of their Premier League survival battle.

Maddison has been sidelined for most of the season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury during pre-season, but has recently returned to the matchday squad and was named among the substitutes in Tottenham's last two fixtures. While his involvement has raised hopes of a late-season boost, De Zerbi says his return to full action is still uncertain.

"I would like to play with him because he is a special player," De Zerbi said. "But we have to consider his physical condition and many factors. I think he can be important in the last games, but I don't know exactly when he will be ready to play."

The England international has not featured in a competitive match for almost a year, but has been involved in training and is being carefully managed as Spurs attempt to balance urgency with caution in their relegation fight.

Tottenham remain in the relegation zone with four games remaining, two points from safety, after ending a long winless run with victory over Wolves. However, that result came at a cost, with Xavi Simons ruled out for the season and Dominic Solanke also picking up an injury.

Despite the setbacks, De Zerbi insists Spurs still have enough quality to survive. He pointed to attacking options such as Richarlison, Randal Kolo Muani and Mathys Tel, while also highlighting the importance of experienced players across the squad.

"If players are injured, others are ready," he said. "They are different, but they are very good players. We have enough quality to win games."

Spurs travel to Aston Villa next, facing a side pushing for European qualification under Unai Emery. De Zerbi stressed the challenge ahead but rejected the idea that a positive result would be extraordinary.

"It is not a miracle if we win," he said. "We are Tottenham. We have to believe in our quality and fight."

With pressure mounting and several senior players unavailable, De Zerbi has repeatedly urged his squad to block out negativity and focus on performances rather than external doubts.

Still, the immediate focus remains on Maddison's potential involvement. His leadership and creativity could prove decisive in the final weeks - if he is deemed fit enough to return to action.
