Tinkler questions Sekhukhune’s mentality against PSL minnows

Sekhukhune United coach Eric Tinkler has raised concerns about what he sees as a lack of hunger when his side faces the Betway Premiership’s so-called minnows.

The former Bafana Bafana midfielder was speaking after Babina Noko produced a spirited display to hold Orlando Pirates to a goalless draw at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon, a result that earned them a valuable point.

Tinkler argued that such performances are too often followed by disappointing results against teams placed below them on the log.

"The frustration I have is that I know the players will pitch up for these games, but the smaller teams are the teams we struggle against. Difference between ourselves and Pirates is Pirates play a game every week with teams wanting to beat them, and they have the mentality that every game is a cup final.

"Why is that the case? The expectation is for them to win leagues. Our players aren't at that stage."

Tinkler used reigning league champions Mamelodi Sundowns as an example, stating that they have made it a habit to get the job done against all their rivals.

The coach revealed he is due to have a tough conversation with his players ahead of the next few matches in the domestic league.

"If you collect maximum points, you get to a really good position. It's been about reiterating that message to the players and they must understand that today for example, some of their contributions were not enough.

"My expectation and the club's expectation is more than what they are giving, so that'll be the focus over the next couple of days."

On gaining a point against Pirates, Tinkler said he was relieved to get something out of it given their overall display.
