The result was a significant statement for “Babina Noko”, who stunned a confident Pirates side in front of a lively crowd at Orlando Stadium.
The decisive moment came early in the second half when Siphesihle Mkhize pounced on an opportunity to score the only goal of the match.
Tinkler emphasised that beyond the three points, he was encouraged by the commitment and work ethic his players displayed.
"It's very important that we kicked this league season off with a win. Today was a test to see where we are, and the character of this team came to the fore again.
"We are creating a well-disciplined and cultured team," said Tinkler.
It was a tough battle between the two teams, and what excited Tinkler about this result is the clean sheet they managed to register and the fighting spirit of his players as they chose their battles and pounced when the time was right.
Just two months ago, a player like Sekhukhune’s centre back Medupi Thokolo was starring for National First Division (NFD) side Casric Stars in the promotional playoffs. Now he’s making his mark in the elite league and deservedly won the man of the match award.
Tinkler says he’s got a bright future ahead of him.
"Three weeks ago, he was playing in the PSL playoffs, and I watched the two games he played against Cape Town City, and it didn't take long for me to recognise his defensive ability."
One of Sekhukhune’s strengths is the number of experienced players in their squad, and some come from Pirates, namely captain Linda Mntambo, Thabang Monare and Miguel Tim.
Tinkler, a former Bucs coach himself, says that is not the only motivation for this group, but the desire inside of them is to achieve big results.
"I don't think this result had anything to do with us being former Orlando Pirates coaches and players, it's all about your desire and passion, and I see it in my players."
