Thabo September rules out PSL return after securing CAF A License

Former Chippa United coach Thabo September has ruled out any possibility of coaching a team in the PSL, unless he gains promotion with his own club Komani United.

September has not been with a top flight side since leaving The Chilli Boys at the end of last season, and instead went on to buy the third tier side in the Eastern Cape.

Komani has gone on to finish in second place in the province’s coastal stream in their first season in the ABC Motsepe League behind Old Grey FC, missing out on the play-offs only on goal difference.

September, who graduated with a CAF A License diploma just last week, says he would rather use the knowledge earned there to improve his club and one day get it to the top league.

“No plans. No plans for a PSL return, except returning with my club as an owner. I want to do a Technical Director course where I can empower myself more and be able to run the club on the outside.

“But in terms of the coaching, I think I will help the coaches around to assist them with the education and experience that I’ve gained. To empower them to be better as well. We’ve sent coaches to coaching courses to help them so that when they get an opportunity to leave the club, they leave as better people and are employable. So no plans of joining another team in the PSL”, said the former Supersport United captain.

While September was obviously disappointed to come so close to the play-offs and not get there, he acknowledged that it was a decent season for a club making its debut in the league.

“We came as runners-up and equal on points with number one, beaten by goal difference, but it was our first season and we have a three-year plan in that project, and we now understand what the quality is like in the ABC.

“For myself I think as an owner it speaks volumes that the team can get to number two in the first season, but we still continue with the project and the targets we have next season and start challenging for the play-offs.”

He also praised SAFA for the role they’ve played to ensure top quality education for coaches in the country. The Football Association also recently appointed former Mauritius TD Zunaid Mall as Head of Coaching Education, in what is seen as a positive move for the department.

“SAFA has been pretty helpful to local coaches. CAF have their requirements for coaches to be on the bench, so this helps a lot of coaches.

“We also have to congratulate Unathi Mabena, coach of the newly-formed Kaizer Chiefs Ladies, who is one of the coaches who were there. This gives her an opportunity as well. What SAFA has done is put us on the map to be employable”, concluded September.
