Temba Bavuma Foundation commemorates 10-year anniversary

Proteas captain Temba Bavuma is glad to have recently returned to Ethuthukweni Primary School in Kagiso for a back-to-school initiative led by his foundation - the Temba Bavuma Foundation.

This year the foundation commemorates 10 years of being a driver of promoting education and sport within disadvantaged communities.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Bavuma says this initiative plays a key role in providing learning essentials to help students draw closer to their dreams without worrying about resources.

"This is one of our flagship events as the Temba Bavuma Foundation. It is part of our strategic objective to make an impact within education. This year is a big year for our foundation, and we would like to celebrate all the work that has gone into this foundation, and all the partnerships we've made which have allowed us to make the type of impact we have made over the years. We seek to support the kids by giving them the resources they need."

Bavuma has also been unveiled as a new brand ambassador for Mukuru - a remittance-led neobank. The collaboration also marks the beginning of what is expected to be an exciting journey toward the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. With Mukuru already serving as a major sponsor of the Zimbabwe Chevrons - their partnership with Bavuma also solidified the brand’s footprint in African cricket.

He further unpacks the importance of corporate backing.

"I'm excited to have them involved in the foundation, and it will help the foundation scale the initiatives we are doing. We'd like to give a lot more bursaries to students out there, and not just here in Gauteng. We'd like to come here and kit out the whole school from a stationary, uniform, and computers perspective.

"Having a partner like Mukuru, they go a long way in doing that."

Meanwhile the national team prepares to host the West Indies in a high-stakes three-match T20 series this week, the spotlight has shifted from the boundary ropes to the notable absence of multi-format captain Bavuma.

With matches scheduled for Paarl, Johannesburg, and Pretoria, the series serves as the final dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup, set to run from 7 February to 8 March.

Bavuma speaks about finding his peace outside the T20 international arena.

"My focus, internationally, is within the Test and ODI space. For as long as I have the role of captain, I'm quite comfortable in those two formats, although I haven't taken myself out of T20 cricket but the situation is what it is."
