Mokoena became the latest Bafana player to celebrate a 50th international cap, during last weekend’s 3-1 win over Zambia in an international friendly match in Gqeberha.
Mokoena, speaking on Thabiso Mosia’s Game On sports show on Radio 2000, says his mother couldn’t hold back the tears on Saturday...
"I'm very excited and happy to have achieved this milestone. I did not think that I would be one of those players to sing the national anthem 50 times.
"I spoke to my mom on the day of the game. She didn't know, and when I told her that I was going to play my 50th game for South Africa, she just broke down and cried tears of happiness."
A son to the late Hellenic and Free State Stars skillful midfielder Alexis Motaung, Mokoena says he wishes he were still alive so he could see the achievements of his son...
Mokoena made his debut for Bafana Bafana under coach Stuart Baxter, but it is under the current head coach, Hugo Broos, that his star power has continued to rise and shine at the international level.
The 28-year-old looks back at his journey...
"There have been many ups and downs in my career, but I'm really happy to have remained consistent. My teammates, family, friends, and fans have all been very supportive, and they made it easy for me to reach this stage in my career."
