Swallows derail Kaizer Chiefs' hopes of finishing runners-up in PSL

Kaizer Chiefs' hopes of ending second in the PSL took a hammer blow when they lost 2-1 to Swallows at the Peter Mokaba stadium on Monday.

All the goals came in the first half with Gregory Damons and Bongani Sam on target for the Birds while Christian Saile had equalised for Amakhosi.

The game was played in the Limpopo Province because Chiefs had an agreement with the local government but it was Swallows who took the lead in the seventh minute.

A long ball played over the top of Amakhosi's defence found the speedy Damons who saw his initial effort saved by Itumeleng Khune but the winger tucked in the rebound.

The visitors could have doubled their lead but Khune produced a good save to deny forward Kagiso Malinga from a header.

It was Chiefs though who found the equaliser after 23 minutes when a set-piece was floated into the box and Saile found himself unmarked at the far-post and made no mistake with the finish.

The teams were only level for 10 minutes and it was another set-piece that was the undoing of Chiefs as Bongani Sam headed in from close-range after a scramble in the penalty area.

Amakhosi came out strong in the second half and dominated proceedings but found Daniel Akpeyi in the Swallows goal a tough nut to crack.

Kwanda Mngonyama and Keegan Allan also put in an outstanding display in the heart of the Swallows defence to keep the Soweto giants at bay.

The victory means Swallows are guaranteed to survive relegation from South Africa's top-flight while Chiefs now sit five points behind second-placed Orlando Pirates with only two games of their campaign remaining.
