SuperSport United's Caf Champions League hopes dented by Stellenbosch

SuperSport United's chances of finishing second in the PSL were dented following a goalless draw against Stellenbosch in a clash played at the TUT stadium on Tuesday.

The stalemate leaves Matsatsantsa one point behind second-placed Orlando Pirates with Gavin Hunt's charges only having two games remaining while the Buccaneers have three matches left.

The result was a good one for Stellies as coach Steve Barker rested a number of his first-choice players ahead of the Nedbank Cup semi-final against Sekhukhune United on Sunday.

The first-half saw the hosts create a few opportunities that fell to Gamphani Lungu but the Zambian failed to hit the target.

Jamie Webber set-up up Lungu with a deft backheel outside the box, but the latter hit a long-range volley that only flew into the stands.

Lungu then had another chance after a defence splitting pass from Grant Margeman but the forward saw his effort sail wide of the target.

Stellies came into the contest after the interval and Jayden Adams tested Ricardo Goss in the home side's goal.

The visitors had the opportunity to win it when Devon Titus crossed to Carlos Ortiz in the box but the forward saw his goal-bound effort brilliantly parried away by Goss.

The point will be invaluable for the Stellies as they look to cement a top-eight place, they are currently sixth in the standings, with the Cup semi to come.
