Eric Tinkler admits Durban City played into Stellenbosch’s hands

Eric Tinkler has attributed Durban City's early Carling Knockout exit to playing into the strengths of Stellenbosch FC, who secured a 2-0 victory in Wednesday night’s clash at Chatsworth Stadium.

The Citizens appeared jaded after their recent African commitments, having qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup group stages with a two-legged victory over AS Port Louis of Mauritius last weekend.

Tinkler made several changes in an attempt to freshen up his side, but the coach felt Stellenbosch ultimately managed the contest better.

"Stellenbosch are a team that obviously looks to play off the mistakes. We gave away too many turnovers, and that is obviously their strength. They look to play on the turnovers; they look to play the long ball and get it in behind, get the ball in the box, and we found it difficult because we ended up going to their brand of football," said Tinkler.

Tinkler did sympathise with his group, citing the demands of the last couple of days but also conceding that some players just weren’t at the level expected.

"I'm very proud of everything they've done. It's not easy; people assume they're machines, and they're not. They are human beings, and there's a thing called mental fatigue. We don't make changes because of the physical – we know physically players are fine . It's more the mental side."

"Sometimes players' performances – I don't want to mention names, but certain performances today were not to the standard of that player. I know what his qualities are, but today his performance wasn't where it should be, and it's not a physical problem –  it's more mental."

Despite the two goals from striker Sinoxolo Kwayiba that sent Stellies to the quarterfinals of the cup competition, coach Gavin Hunt was quick to point out their overall performance was far from flattering.

Hunt added there was no time to bask in the celebrations with a Betway Premiership fixture against Chippa United on Saturday to follow.

The coach raised concerns over the fitness of his players.
