Sundowns held to draw by AS FAR Rabat in CAF Champions League

Mamelodi Sundowns continued their slow start to the CAF Champions League group stage with a 1-1 draw against AS FAR Rabat on Saturday night at Stade Ben Ahmed El Abdi.

The first half saw neither side able to find the back of the net, ending goalless despite several attempts from both teams.

Sundowns broke the deadlock in the 66th minute when Iqraam Rayners capitalised on a lightning-fast counter-attack initiated by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Rayners' clinical finish momentarily put the South African champions in control.

However, AS FAR Rabat struck back just eight minutes later. The Moroccan side equalised in the 74th minute through captain Mohamed Hrimat, who converted a precise pass from Youseef El Fahli.

The hosts' equaliser shifted the momentum as both teams fought to claim all three points in the closing stages.

The draw marked Sundowns' second consecutive stalemate in the group stage, leaving them in third place with just two points from two matches.

The South African side, known for their dominance in previous campaigns, are facing criticism for their underwhelming performances so far.

Despite the result, Rayners emerged as a standout performer, securing Sundowns' only goal, while Williams' vision in initiating the counter-attack also drew praise.

Sundowns will now focus on their upcoming clash against another Moroccan side, Raja Casablanca, on December 15.

The match, set to be played at Sundowns' home ground, presents a crucial opportunity to revive their campaign and climb the group standings.
