Steve Barker calls on Stellenbosch to put in another shift against Polokwane City

Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker has challenged his side to continue their opening day form when they face newly-promoted Polokwane City.

Stellies picked up an important three points at the weekend when they defeated Orlando Pirates 1-0 with Antonio van Wyk scoring the only goal of the game after 42 minutes.

Next up is a Rise and Shine side who were unlucky to go down 1-0 to a very late Cape Town City goal in their 2023/24 DStv Premiership season opener.

Reflecting on his side's win over Bucs, Barker said in the Citizen that Stellenbosch deserved all three points for their superior game-play.

The head coach explained on his club's website: "The ethos of our club, and the teams we have, is one of worth ethic, team unity, positivity, accountability, and responsibility, and I thought we showed that.

"The shift that the players put in, the tactical discipline and tactical awareness that we applied, especially without the ball, was really good."

Barker added: "Obviously, to start the season with a home win over Orlando Pirates is really good, and the challenge now is to make sure we maintain the work ethic, attitude, and discipline to Wednesday's match against Polokwane City."
