Steve Barker applauds SuperSport United model ahead of cup tie

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has praised SuperSport United’s club model as the two sides prepare to face off for a spot in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals next month.

Barker was asked for his views on the two clubs’ similarities as they have both shown faith in their respective youth structures.

He explains why the cup tie will be a closely contested affair.

"That's why I think our encounters are always tight and as close it has been. They've got some really seasoned senior players – so do we; they've got some really good young players – so do we," said Barker.

"Their structures, the SuperSport youth system is well known in South Africa to have produced many, many top talented footballers, and we're sort of on that path.

"We're trying to sort of emulate teams like the Ajax Cape Town of the past, as well as SuperSport, in producing young players for our team.

"So, I think that's why a game against SuperSport is as close and tough as it is because, as you say, there are a lot of similarities [in how things are being done]."

The DStv Premiership log table also currently reflects how comparable Stellies are to Matsatsantsa, with a single point between them in fourth and third place respectively – with 10 games to go.

And, like the Tshwane outfit, Stellies have also had to deal with the traditional big clubs in the PSL chasing after their prized assets.

Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams is getting a lot of attention at the moment, but Barker has urged him to focus on the remainder of the season.

"I think I've addressed that sort of question on a number of occasions, I don't think now is the right time. I think, obviously, we need to concentrate on what we need to do in the short-term, which is to continue having a solid season," he added.

"Players like Jayden are important to us, and we need him to be focussed and be present with us until the end of the season, and then we'll see what happens."
