Stellies clinch deal for Chiefs winger Sekgota

Stellenbosch FC have finalised the signing of their prized possession yet, as much sought-after winger Kgaogelo Sekgota puts pen to paper, SABC Sport understands.

The public broadcaster recently reported coach Steve Barker’s side were eager to bring the Kaizer Chiefs attacker to the Winelands ahead of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) kick-off on Friday.

It is believed with the injuries and work permit hurdles saddling Stellies, the dazzling Sekgota is likely to make his debut against Orlando Pirates on Saturday at the Danie Craven Stadium.

The move comes after what seemed like a stalemate in talks between Chiefs and Stellies, but with Barker’s persistence, it was smiles all around in the end.

Stellies were on the lookout for a player of the attacker’s calibre to beef up their squad following the transfer of Junior Mendieta to Mamelodi Sundowns – and Barker has always been an admirer of Sekgota.

The Glamour Boys were not desperate for a sale because there was no indication the Bafana Bafana international would be deemed surplus to requirements by coach Molefi Ntseki this season.

So, following conversations with all parties concerned, a mutual termination resulted in the transfer, much to the disappointment of SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt, who wanted the winger as well, according to reliable sources.

The 26-year-old had entered the final year of his three-year contract with Chiefs hence the clubs’ ability to acquire him in a move that would strengthen relations between the two clubs.

SABC Sport has it on good authority Moroka Swallows also attempted to re-sign the player who was on their books for the 2020/21 season.

Sekgota has also been on the radar of clubs in Belgium, but a move to Europe is not happening soon as things stand.

Amakhosi travelled to Botswana for a friendly match against Township Rollers at the weekend, but Sekgota was not part of the squad that featured in that 1-0 defeat played at the National Stadium.
