Stellenbosch assessing defender Maxim Gullit son of Dutch legend

SABC Sport can reveal that Stellenbosch FC are currently assessing defender Maxim Gullit, who is the son of Dutch legend Ruud Gullit.

It’s understood the lanky 22-year-old centre back has been in the country for several weeks now in the hopes of impressing coach Steve Barker and securing a move to the DStv Premiership outfit as a free agent.

Stellies could very well be in the market for a defender of the same stature as Olwethu Makhanya, who was sold to Major League Soccer outfit Philadelphia Union, and Vusi Sibiya. Both left at the beginning of the season.

Although the club has since promoted a few players from their academy as well as having recruited Thabo Moloisane and Olivier Toure,  the door isn’t completely closed.

Gullit started off his career at Jong AZ before being promoted to the senior team in the Eredivisie, however he had stepped down to the second tier at SC Cambuur until leaving the side effective July 1 last year.

There had been signs of a promising career after he was selected to represent the Netherlands U/19, but after seven appearances he did not feature for the junior national teams afterwards.

Now looking to return back to regular football, Stellies could be his likely destination if Barker sees what he likes during the assessment.

Gullit is also has a link to another former Dutch great in the late Johan Cruyff because his mother, Estelle, is the former Barcelona icon’s niece.

It remains to be seen whether he will be playing in the Premier Soccer League soon.
