Serhou Guirassy double sends Dortmund past Monterrey and into Club World Cup quarters

Borussia Dortmund advanced to the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Monterrey on Tuesday night in Atlanta.

Serhou Guirassy was the star of the night, netting both goals in the opening 24 minutes to lift the Bundesliga side. Karim Adeyemi assisted both strikes, showcasing a lively attacking partnership.

The first goal came in the 14th minute when Guirassy finished a slick one-two with Adeyemi with a low shot.

Ten minutes later, Adeyemi chased down a long ball and squared it to Guirassy, who tapped in for his third goal of the tournament.

Monterrey responded strongly in the second half, with German Berterame heading in from a deflected Erick Aguirre cross. It was also Berterame's third goal of the competition.

Jesus Corona had a golden chance to equalise 11 minutes later, but his one-on-one effort was saved by Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel.

Sergio Ramos nearly forced extra time with a stoppage-time header that flew just wide, but Dortmund held on to become the fifth and final European side to reach the last eight, joining Bayern Munich as the second German representative.

One notable absence in the next round will be Jobe Bellingham, who is suspended after receiving his second yellow card of the tournament for a foul on Nelson Deossa.

That rules out a highly anticipated face-off with his brother Jude, who plays for Dortmund's next opponents, Real Madrid.
