Serhou Guirassy backed to find form as Borussia Dortmund prepare for Stuttgart clash

Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac has publicly backed striker Serhou Guirassy amid a challenging spell in front of goal, emphasising his overall value to the team ahead of Saturday's Bundesliga home match against VfB Stuttgart.

Guirassy, who joined Dortmund from VfB Stuttgart in summer 2024 and enjoyed a prolific debut campaign, scoring 21 Bundesliga goals and sharing the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League Golden Boot with 13 strikes, has managed just one goal in his last eight competitive appearances across all competitions.

This recent dip has raised questions about his sharpness, particularly after a minor injury picked up on international duty in October disrupted his rhythm.

Speaking to reporters, Kovac stressed that Guirassy's contributions extend far beyond scoring. "Many focus only on him as a striker, but I see exactly how important he is for the whole team," Kovac said. "We're missing his goals at the moment, but they'll come back. I'm delighted to have him, and he'll keep getting my full support."

The Croatian coach drew on past experiences with goal-shy forwards. "I've had strikers go through similar phases at previous clubs. That's precisely when they need the coach's trust most, and Serhou has that from me, 100 percent."

Kovac also highlighted the positive impact of Guirassy skipping the November international break. The 29-year-old remained in Dortmund rather than linking up with Guinea for friendlies, allowing extra recovery and training time following his recent fitness issues.

"He had a small problem after the last international window in October, and staying here has helped him get back to full physical condition without additional travel or strain," Kovac added.

Despite the current drought, Guirassy, often described by Kovac as the team's "life insurance", remains a central figure in Dortmund's attack as they look to maintain their push for the top spots against his former club Stuttgart. BVB will be aiming to reignite their star forward's scoring touch and close the gap to leaders Bayern Munich.
